The National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) offers social health insurance coverage by paying medical bills once a member visits an accredited hospital. The Member first has to register with NHIF and pay a monthly premium of Kes. 500 a month or Kes. 6000 per annum. The monthly premium should be paid before the 9th of every month.
Once registered and paid, a member should choose an outpatient hospital that they can access anytime they are unwell. The Member can change or retain the outpatient hospital after every four months. This gives the member control to change their outpatient facility if they are not happy with the services received within the capitation period.
NHIF aims to provide financial protection against the high costs of medical care and to ensure that people have access to necessary medical treatment.
NHIF is thus essential for several reasons:
- Financial protection: NHIF covers medical expenses, which can be very expensive. As a member, you are protected from financial ruin in case of a severe illness or injury.
- Access to care: Health insurance can give you access to a broader range of medical services and treatments. This can improve your chances of receiving early diagnosis and treatment for health problems.
- Peace of mind: Health insurance can provide peace of mind when you know that you and your family are shielded in case of unexpected health problems.
- Required by law: In Kenya, having NHIF health insurance is required by law, following the passing into law of the NHIF (Amendment) Act 2022. The Act stipulates that a person who has reached the age of 18 years and is not a beneficiary shall register as a member of the Fund.
Health insurance through NHIF will provide financial protection, improve access to care, give peace of mind, and is a legal requirement in Kenya.
